MBALAKH VOL I

I lived in Dakar in 2008 for roughly 5 months and during this time I had some really wonderful musical adventures.  An Mbalakh gig can be incredibly phenomenal and these experiences will always stay with me. I had earlier been introduced to the music of Youssou N’dour and Lamine Faye by ‘the G’ and the ‘king of talking drum’ Malik Diop. Special mentions must also be made to the extended Diop family and my good friend the international SáiSái Mansour Ndour. Listen and I hope you enjoy - SAM Z

Lapa Vol II

The series continues with more early pagode and samba. One of the essential necessities of the late night in Lapa. The other being white Cachaça. The second half moves into more Brasilian jazz/MPB with tracks by Clara Nunes, Elza Soares, Zimbo Trio and Tania Maria - SAM Z

Lapa Vol I

In the summer of 2009 Shárika and I travelled the Brasilian coastline, from Iguazu to Salvador. Along the way we experienced a lot of good times and discovered some great music. This mix includes tracks by Beth Carvalho, Zeca Pagodinho, Elis Regina and Hermeto Pascoal. Big thanks to the pre-carnival Lapa street parties and the Vila Madalena record markets – SAM Z

Year 10

This was point in my life when I had really discovered Hip Hop. Next Level had become a second home, the Limewire was running overtime and I had been living in New York. It wasn’t until Loose Change got going and I began spending a lot of time with LS , J-Rap and the one and only P (Fazza) Major that this golden era of listening was rejuvenated. Special mentions to Dr Phibes and Percee P - SAM Z
